The Bodhran is a hand-held frame drum played using various playing techniques with one hand using a beater (or tipper). This allows for a variety of rhythmic patterns and dynamics to emerge during gameplay.

Although bodhrans had long existed in Ireland, they only achieved mainstream prominence thanks to Sean O Riada and the Ceoltoiri Chualann band led by Sean O Riada during the Celtic music revival led by him in the 1990s.
