How to Find a Bodhran For Sale

1. Visit a store that understands Celtic music before purchasing your instrument. Don’t settle for bodhrans that are jammed between electric guitars and saxophones – buy from one that knows about Celtic tunes instead!

2. Choose a tunable drum. A good drum should provide both high quality tones and maximum playing comfort, both of which will ultimately increase.

3. Choose a shallower frame. Deeper frames tend to produce muffled sound.

Bodhr’n

A traditional Irish drum, the bodhr’n is capable of both organic bass tones and melodic highs, providing a rich palette of rhythmic possibilities. An essential element in any Irish music session, its deep sound can add zest to songs and dances alike; its seemingly simplistic shape belies its depth of ability.

An electric drum can be customized to produce distinct tones and its drum head may be constructed of goat skin or synthetic material – with goatskin known for warmer and more natural tones and synthetic heads providing durability and consistency respectively. Both choices have their own advantages; ultimately, personal preference should dictate your choice.

When purchasing a bodhran, make sure to watch as many performances as possible; this is the only way you’ll truly understand its sound when at its best. Also visit a music store with knowledge about Celtic music and bodhrans; their staff should be able to guide your search and answer any queries that arise.

A bodhr’n can be purchased either as a non-tunable or tunable model; most beginners start with non-tunable drums due to being more affordable and easier for short arms or reach players to play. If you want greater control of sound and tone control however, tunable bodhrans may be preferred for serious musicians looking for maximum sound customization and tone regulation.

There are various factors that affect a bodhran’s sound and playability, including skin type/quality, height and depth of its shell and optional cross bars. The ideal diameter for contemporary use of this instrument ranges between 30-35 cm; depth should range between 15-20 cm; a deeper bodhran will sound fuller while lighter ones have sharper tones.

Select a bodhran constructed of quality materials. A good bodhran should be sturdy with no gaps or cracks in its frame, comfortable to play on with minimal pressure applied. Too small an instrument will make playing difficult; too large one may prove challenging and damage skin with its excessive pressure application.

A bodhran’s shell can be constructed from either staves or veneer. Stave constructions tend to be heavier, and should only be used for larger drums like snare drums, congas or bongos. Stave construction should only ever be glued in the opposite direction as its wood grain to prevent warping; in terms of tone quality and tuning ease a veneered shell bodhran would make more sense than its stave counterpart.
