There is an array of bodhrans on the market, each offering something different in terms of design. Bodhran bar distance is important as it determines your tone-hand’s range of movement.

Skilled players of this instrument can utilize it to express a variety of rhythms that range from somberness, joyousness or martial calls-to-action.

Bodhrans

The bodhran is a seemingly unassuming drum; however, its simplicity belies its complex makeup. Non-musicians who wish to pass themselves off as musicians sometimes choose the bodhran; unfortunately this often results in terrible sound: imagine an accordion accompanied by four or five players battering away at personal variations on the beat and seeing whether any music comes out!

Bodhran playing should support and complement melodic and rhythmic elements in a session without taking over its focus or purpose. If this cannot be accomplished, then perhaps another instrument would better suit.

The best bodhran players use their fingers to beat the skin, altering timbre and pitch. They play accented rim shots for accent, as well as rhythms independent of tune (including counter rhythm and syncopation) outside tune. In an ensemble setting they can blend seamlessly with bass, lead and other instruments – adding an earthy spice that enhances musical compositions and ensemble performances alike. This contribution from these talented artists cannot be overestimated.

Bodhran skins

No matter if it’s lambeg, vellum, or greyhound skins – each is distinct and will produce its own distinctive sound. Bodhrans’ wide range of notes allows players to express a variety of emotions and moods – from anguish and sorrow all the way up to joyful celebration. In certain circumstances it even serves as a martial call-to-arms.

Remember to apply conditioner when playing your bodhran, such as neetsfoot oil or lanolin cream which are available from most hardware stores and tack shops; alternatively use moisturizing hand cream.

If you’re confused about how to care for your bodhran, consult an experienced player for advice. They can assist with selecting an appropriate tone and tension setting – helping you to produce rich bass sounds with an upbeat top end response.

The Bodhran is an integral component of Irish folk music. An earthy yet warm instrument, its versatile tones complement Irish flutes wonderfully; plus, this drum can be played using only one hand!

The frame is typically constructed of wood – either plywood or solid wood, and features a crossbar, with goatskin tacked to it for tacking purposes. Although goat skin preparation occurs mostly in Ireland, other skins are occasionally used such as calf, emu, kangaroo or greyhound as well.

The place of the bodhran in Irish music has long been debated. Although many arguments regarding its role do not stand up to closer inspection, they provide a framework for research. Furthermore, La an Dreoilin uses it as part of their custom, where Irish mummers or “wren boys” dress in straw outfits and travel from house to house entertaining residents with music, songs, and dance.

Bodhran repair

Originally, the bodhran was used for both work and play; today it’s an iconic musical instrument in Celtic and world music. Its circular frame features wood strips that cross at right angles to form its handle, while a goatskin membrane covers its shell, usually composed of birch wood; however some modern models come equipped with synthetic skins.

Bodhrans require very minimal care beyond protecting its skin from wear and tear. To maintain optimal performance, however, conditioning the hide with olive oil or natural oils like lavender may help restore it over time – this should be done every month for six months before decreasing to every three to four months thereafter.

Bob will demonstrate his skills at the Repair Acts Ireland stand (#21) within the Green Environmental Awareness tent of the Fleadh. Additionally, Paraic McNeela will run workshops to teach participants how to create and repair their own bodhran.
