The McNeela Bodhran Drum

mcneela bodhran

The Bodhran is an Irish frame drum, typically played using hand techniques and an animal skin drumhead. Tunable or fixed tuning options exist and it features natural pitch changes and tonal variations for musicality. It can be fixed or tuned and features an animal skin drumhead. Interestingly enough, its natural pitch changes and tonal variations also make it melodic drum.

McNeela instruments has created a shallower-rim bodhran that is more suitable for petite musicians, giving it its distinctive boomy bass tone while remaining comfortable to use.

Handmade in Ireland

The Bodhran is an Irish frame drum typically played by striking its goatskin head with a short stick known as a beater, tipper, or cipin. It usually features a narrow center that can accommodate single- or double-headed models; additionally it allows one hand to be placed against its interior to adjust pitch and timbre.

Modern bodhrans feature inner skin anchored to their shell with screws that can be tightened or loosened by players to alter tone and tuning. This innovation was pioneered by Seamus O’Kane of Dungiven, County Londonderry in Ireland and has revolutionized both their making and playing of bodhrans.

Bodhran players can not only tailor the tone of their instrument but can also alter its size to control resonation levels – this feature can be particularly helpful to drummers looking to craft unique sounds for sessions and performances.

High quality goatskin

Goatskin leather is an exquisite material used in fine bookbinding. Soft yet sturdy, its characteristically beautiful aging makes each cover special and unique. Tannaged with traditional vegetable preservatives for long-term strength and suppleness.

Our goatskin comes from healthy animals and is carefully selected and examined for quality. Once selected, it is naturally hand-cured in lime to create an ideal bass tone before being pickled and stretched to close up pores before finally being left out in the sun to dry for an aesthetically pleasing, clean ‘bleached’ finish.

This exquisite Bible is handcrafted using superior goatskin leather, European Bible paper and art gilding on its binding flap (yapp), which extends past page edges. Furthermore, three satin ribbon bookmarks add extra charm – making this gift suitable for any special occasion!

Adjustable rim

Deeper Bodhran Rims Resonate More Perfectly | Bodhrans with deeper rims are known for producing deeper bass tones, making them perfect for traditional Irish music sessions. Unfortunately, some musicians may find a deep-rimmed bodhran difficult to hold comfortably – especially young or petite players – however many bodhrans come equipped with cutouts in the frame so as to provide space for players’ arms when playing for greater player comfort.

McNeela Instruments offers an assortment of adjustable-rim bodhrans, such as their new model The Wave. Equipped with a tuning system and available with either Lambeg or Vellum goatskin to suit different environments and musical preferences, The Wave offers users the freedom to craft an unforgettable sound unique to themselves. Furthermore, the hand tuning system is simple to use and quickly responds to changing environmental conditions so musicians can perform confidently on stage – whether accompanying bands or solo. Investing in The Wave would be wise for anyone serious about learning their instrument!
