Meinl Bodhran Tippers

The modern bodhran has quickly become one of the world’s most beloved instruments, beloved and appreciated worldwide. To play properly, a bodhran requires special sticks known as beater/tipper/cipin.

Seamus O’Kane introduced a significant breakthrough to bodhran-making with his creation of an ingenious mechanical tuning system using cams and an internal oak ring for tightening or loosening tone.

Weighted beaters

Although bodhran can be played by hand, Irish players generally use a beater (also called tipper stick or cipin). These sticks contain small metal weights made from brass or steel to produce different sounds while simultaneously helping reduce wrist pressure by swinging easily from hand to hand.

Hot rod tippers are another popular style, featuring thin wooden dowels held together with tape that produce an audible click when struck, creating a powerful sound with more attack than hard tippers for an overall full and rich tone.

The VKB5 bodhran beaters are designed for ultimate comfort and performance, with its wooden shaft evenly dispensing weight for incredible feel and balance, while its reduced size felt head enhances dynamic range control. Co-created with world-renowned drummer Peter Erskine, these VKB5 beaters will take your playing to another level.

Tunable beaters

This Irish Bodhran allows you to adjust the tension of its goatskin drum head. This allows for an array of tones and effects that can be achieved simply by applying pressure to its surface with your hand, making this ideal for musicians looking to take their music to new levels. Complete with beater and tipper, as well as an 18″ frame drum made from cedar with goatskin head featuring beater/tippper attachments, beater/tipper for tipping. Also included with Meinl bodhran cases comes ribbed grip handles featuring electrical colored plastic bandings to protect it in great condition for storage!

Bodhrans with jingles

The bodhran is a round frame drum made with animal skin – usually goat but sometimes also cow or deer skin – designed primarily for use in Irish music but sometimes also added into nontraditional songs by artists as a beat source.

Though usually associated with rhythm instruments, bodhran can also add embellishment and heighten melody in tunes. By striking its surface with thumb and knuckle strikes, players can achieve various tones–from urgent taps to soft melodious rings–using this instrument.

While the type of wood doesn’t have much of an effect on the sound produced by a bodhran, it does impact how comfortable and controlled its feel in your hand is. Therefore, it is wise to try out several bodhrans before selecting one that feels best to hold and play; once you find an instrument that feels comfortable to you it will become easier for you to learn how to play!
