A bodhran is an Irish drum composed of goatskin stretched over a wooden riddle that was once used for winnowing grains. Some bodhrans are tunable, with adjustable lugs or bolts on the back that can change its pitch; its predecessor was tambourines; some musicians play them without using sticks but this may make it hard to hear over other instruments in a live performance setting.

Traditional

Although it resembles a snare drum in appearance, playing the bodhran differs significantly in how it’s played. You should typically position it on your knee while holding one hand with one hand while using the other to play; right-handed players would hold their bodhran with their left and use their right to play; a beater called a tipper will strike down into its goatskin head to produce sound and hit its goatskin head surface with strikes of downward energy that strike against its skin surface surface to create sound and music!

The bodhran is an affordable yet basic frame drum found throughout culture worldwide. While easy to learn, regular practice will be required in order to develop strong rhythmic skills and a solid beat.
