Ceoltoiri Chualann have taken bodhran playing to new levels of artistic sophistication. Origins
One can hardly find an Irish music session without seeing at least one bodhran present, adding depth and rhythm to the music with this simple yet sophisticated drum. A must-have in any musician’s arsenal!
It is believed that the bodhran developed from an animal skin and wood frame tool used for carrying peat or potatoes. It resembles frame drums used in North Africa – something which would make sense considering Ireland has long had trade relationships with those countries.
Sean O Riada, Peadar Mercier and John Joe Kelly have made significant strides toward evolving the instrument into its modern state. These pioneering players developed playing techniques that have changed its dynamic sound.
Tone
Walton bodhrans provide premium musical tone with sleek wooden frames and handpicked goatskin heads, available in multiple sizes with tuning mechanisms suitable for beginner players through advanced players.
Historically, performers would use only their hands to play an instrument, however today the vast majority rely on a stick called a cipin to perform. Holding both ends above your head (Kerry style) or only one (top-end style).
Johnny “Ringo” McDonagh and Tommy Hayes of De Dannan and Stocktons Wing have pioneered innovative techniques for expanding the capabilities of bodhrans for accompaniment experimentation, improvisational work and traditional forms. As a result, these master players have helped modernise its sound; now a staple accompaniment in Irish music sessions.
