Bodhrn

The Bodhran is at the core of Irish music. This ancient frame drum has come to represent Irish culture with its classic sound and simple design, becoming a beloved symbol in its own right. Dubbed as ‘the most Irish of instruments’ despite having ancient origins it only received widespread recognition during the revival of Irish folk music in the 1960s through Sean O Riada including it in Ceoltoiri Chualann ensemble and since then becoming beloved among many people.

It is thought that the bodhran evolved from an instrument known as the tabor, used by Celtic warriors in battle as it provided them with a steady rhythm to march to. Today, it is considered to be one of the oldest musical instruments around – boasting an intricate goat skin head attached to a circular wooden body and played using a stick known as a cipin or tipper stick.

Modern bodhrans have evolved considerably over time and feature sophisticated tuning systems that enable musicians to control the quality of sound they produce. When selecting a bodhran, consider its diameter, depth, tuneability and whether or not its rim depth determines tone or pitch; deeper drums produce richer tones while shallow ones may be better suited to beginners.
