Although bodhrans can be played by hand, many drummers today prefer using a bodhran beater (commonly referred to as a tipper, stick or cipin). Bodhran beaters come in various shapes and sizes and produce unique sounds when hit against the instrument.

Some bodhran beaters come equipped with extra weight to ease wrist pressure, while others were designed in consultation with experienced players.

Hot Rod Style

Hot rod-style bodhran beaters are composed of several rods bundled together and produce a loud sound when played against an Irish bodhran. Used extensively by kit drummers for decades prior to making their way onto Irish bodhran stages, hot rod style beaters quickly found a place among Irish bodhran players as a powerful beater style.

While wood choice does not directly impact the sound of your bodhran beater, it does have an immense effect on its comfort in your hand – something which ultimately has an enormous effect on both your playing experience and overall satisfaction as a bodhran player.

Our HedRods come equipped with two rear rings that enable you to customize their solidity. By moving these rings you can alter how solid the HedRod feels – by dampening its attack similar to traditional wooden beaters, resulting in less unsprung mass hitting the drum head and producing much subtler bass volumes.
