Bodhran Tippers
No matter if you are an experienced player looking to hone your craft or are just getting started, choosing the appropriate beater is key in creating sound and style. Experimentation is essential in finding your ideal beater!
Hot rod tippers have grown increasingly popular as they produce softer sounds and lower impacts per stroke while still producing crisp clicks. Furthermore, there are various weight options to choose from.
Straight or Solid
Tippers (also referred to as beaters, sticks or cipins) are small wooden baton-like instruments used to strike the surface of bodhran drums to produce iconic Irish tunes. When properly used and handled they can reduce wrist fatigue while improving your playing.
Beginners tend to favor more basic designs to focus on technique while more experienced players may prefer more tailored beaters that match their playing style and amplify sound production. Experimentation is key in finding your ideal beater!
Clickers are beaters with one end split into segments that creates an audible clicking sound when struck, making for an attractive addition to bodhran playing. They tend to be lighter weight than regular single sloped tippers, making them suitable for beginners as well as those looking to minimize wrist strain – one such example of this would be MEINL Percussion’s Bodhran Clicker!
Curved
An effective bodhran beater, also known as a tipper or cipin, has a dramatic impact on how you play your drum. Wood type has limited bearing on sound production; rather it is determined by how comfortable the beater feels in your hand and its grip against skin that determines its effectiveness across different playing styles.
Soft-ended beaters with padded ends produce muted sounds ideal for gentle playing styles and quiet performances, while hard-ended beaters deliver sharp strikes more suitable to dynamic musical performances.
Some bodhran beaters feature weighted ends to reduce edge loading and dampen unwanted overtones, while others feature ribs on their beater’s end for easy grip and reduced wrist strain. Ronan O Snodaigh designed his famous Whipper Tipper bodhran beater as an ideal option for beginners looking to achieve his signature sound while remaining lightweight enough for reduced wrist strain.
Hot Rod
Bodhran tippers’ materials have little bearing on their sound, yet can significantly affect weight and feel. Available in a range of shapes and wood species including bamboo, birch, and beech; hot rod beaters feature thin dowels tied together for softer clicks than hard tippers.
Most bodhran players carry both types of beaters in their arsenal – and you should too! While brushes and clickers make learning the bodhran easier, solid tippers provide additional speed and volume benefits.
Some new bodhran tippers allow the dowels to be tightened or loosened for increased flexibility in sound output. When wide apart, wider dowels produce softer sounds with percussive clicks; when closer together provide harder sounds similar to hard beaters. Some models even combine both of these features; this means bodhran beaters can be customized according to personal style and comfort preferences.
Weighted
Wood used in making bodhran sticks has very little bearing on their sound or feel; rather, its overall weight and feel will determine its sound output. Bodhran sticks can be made using materials such as ebony, grenadilla rosewood or even eucalyptus snakewood – among many others.
Many bodhran tippers come equipped with weighted ends to assist the beater swing more freely in your hand and reduce wrist pressure, enabling faster and more powerful playing.
Other special beaters such as brush and felt tippers offer various sound qualities, with ebony-snakewood brush beaters creating subtler sounds from wooden attack, while the undulating rattan beater features undulating swish sound waves. Other tipper models such as MoGrip and MONSTER were specifically created for specific playing styles and sound ideals by experienced bodhran players to enable you to make the most out of your instrument and create your own individual style of playing with its cores for soft click sounds which can be customized by tightening or loosening the dowels.
