What is a Bodhran?
The Bodhran is an Irish frame drum featuring a goatskin head tacked to one side and its distinctive sound can range from quiet to loud depending on how it is played. Additionally, this flexible instrument can be played either with hands alone or beaters attached.
Bodhrans had been around since antiquity but only truly became mainstream during the 1960s with Irish traditional music’s rise in popularity.
It’s a drum
The Bodhran is an immensely versatile drum. It can be played either barehanded, or using a stick called a Cipin, made of goat skin or other kinds of animal hide such as deer, greyhound, or even kangaroo skins.
Though seemingly humble in appearance, the bodhran has taken on an integral part in Irish music. It serves as an accompaniment for folk songs – particularly ballads and jigs – as well as adding rhythmic energy during live performances.
The bodhran is easy to play, yet requires practice to perfect its skills. Striking the drumhead with your heel of hand for loud beats and using palm flats for soft sounds are important components. Bodhrans can be played in various styles; such as steady beat, jig and slide rhythms allow performers to create unique and captivating rhythms that draw listeners in.

A bodhran drum is typically decorated with paint, often depicting various symbols ranging from Celtic spirals and GAA county colors, to family coats of arms and family coats of arms. While these decorations don’t affect its sound or tone, they add an aesthetic element. Bodhrans come in different sizes with smaller ones providing greater versatility and lighter tones.
