Bodhran playing has seen tremendous advancement since Sean O Riada began including arrangements for it into his music. Innovative players such as Peadar Mercier of The Chieftains and Johnny Ringo McDonagh have introduced new styles of bodhran play into their style of music.

Weighted beaters

The beater or tipper, as it is sometimes known, is the stick used to hit the bodhran during play. It can be made out of anything that will provide a strong strike and feel, though most are turned on a lathe and feature elaborate designs. You can choose any length you desire but most range between six to eight inches long; traditionally hardwood beaters such as maple and walnut have been popular choice; softwood will work just as well and some players even prefer it due to its lighter weight.

Wooden beaters from this collection offer a variety of tones and attack options. Some models are very light in weight while others can weigh considerably more; where you position the weight on its shaft will affect how much power is generated by each.

DW Wooden Beater The wooden beaters supplied with DW pedals are an example of the variety available on the market. This particular model features an expansive striking surface, interchangeable felt and wooden faces, removable brass weights (up to 13 ounces!) for increased power; lighter models provide sufficient flexibility.

MFX Beater Weight

These wood beaters feature a nylon flange at the center of their shaft that allows it to slide easily up and down without damaging it, and easily be adjusted to meet your desired weight. Simply tighten or loosening a brass thumbscrew can set how much weight is desired!
