McNeela Bodhran – The Beaten Heart of Celtic Music

Peadar Mercier (and his son Mel), Tommy Hayes, Johny Ringo McDonagh and others have made this iconic Irish drum an essential element of Celtic music.

The Bodhran is a single-headed frame drum with a shallow circular shell, featuring an animal skin membrane attached to one open end and two wooden strips inserted at right angles into its interior wall.

Product Description

Bodhrans are ancient Irish drums still played today and make a popular Irish gift, as their beautiful artwork often graces their skins.

Irish music enthusiasts and professional musicians alike can purchase these instruments, from small souvenir bodhrans that make great presents to larger tunable ones used by professional musicians. Crafted with goatskin for its distinct and haunting sound.

The Bodhran is a single headed frame drum with one side tacked to its shell (often goatskin), and an open end which allows a player to place his or her hand against it to control pitch and tone. Some variations also have one or two crossbars inside their frame for tuning purposes.

Bodhrans were initially used primarily as agricultural tools; however, since 1951 when Ceoltas Ceoiltoiri Eireann was founded, their use as musical instruments has increased significantly within Irish traditional music sessions.
