Bodhran Beater

To play the bodhran drum effectively, it requires the appropriate beater. For optimal performance, this should fit comfortably in your hand and feel natural when held. Furthermore, its light weight should minimize wrist strain.

Toss the Feathers is a 19th-century Irish jig that highlights the bodhran’s accompaniment capabilities with lively rhythms that elevate its narrative.

Hard Tip

While the bodhran can be played by hand, many modern Irish playing styles strongly prefer using a beater stick (sometimes referred to as a tipper ) made from various woods for beating it with. These beater sticks come in various shapes and sizes.

Hard tip beaters made from bar ash offer a strong sound and percussive click when striking the bodhran head, and hold chalk more effectively than soft tip beaters without mushrooming as easily.

These beaters feature wide barbell-style tips on both ends with slight curved ridges for improved gripping, providing comfort in the hand but may be too heavy for beginners as they place extra strain on wrist ligaments. Our models with weighted tips help further reduce wrist strain; additionally they produce thicker sound quality making them suitable for more experienced players.

Soft Tip

Bodhran beaters (also referred to as cipin or tippers) are essential pieces of equipment for any bodhran player, as their quality can greatly impact how the drum sounds as well as how it feels in your hands.

Meinl’s Bodhran Beater is constructed from premium ash wood and designed for maximum ergonomic use in all your bodhran techniques. Despite being slightly heavier than some other beaters, its weight contributes to thicker tones for experienced players.

These Bodhran beaters are constructed from thin dowels which can be tightened or loosen to adjust their sound output; wider apart produces softer sounds with percussive clicks while closer together produces harder clicks reminiscent of hard beaters. Perfect for beginning players of the bodhran. Also available as a weighted version to reduce wrist pressure.

Weighted

Weighted beaters are an indispensable addition to every bodhran player’s toolbox. These sticks, typically 230mm (9″) long and double ribbed for improved grip, produce more of a brush sound on thick skinned instruments – perfect for playing reels and jigs!

This type of bodhran stick features brass or steel weights glued onto its tips, providing extra comfort in hand while producing thicker sounds on drum. However, an occasional drawback could be wrist strain for novice players; thus this beater may be best for experienced drummers only; moreover it is more costly than its single sloped tipper counterpart but certainly worth trying! This bodhran stick should definitely be given a try!

Internal Tunable

McNeela Bodhran Store provides an assortment of high quality musical instruments, such as the iconic Irish frame drum – the bodhran. A resonant, earthy and versatile musical instrument which can be played using either hand, its sound is determined primarily by its goatskin head; when cared for correctly it produces superior sounds.

A bodhran can be struck using either your hand or with an instrument known as a beater, tipper or cipin stick. These beaters come in hard, soft or split varieties and produce different sounds when struck against.

Tunable bodhrans feature an internal tuning system that makes tuning it up or down effortless, making them ideal for musicians who play in various settings and conditions. Furthermore, having one will help you play it according to its original purpose of accompanying melodic players rather than leading tunes directly.
